I'm a social anthropologist working in marketing and I'm passionate about food, traveling to big cities and dogs. I like being that person everyone comes for recommendations especially if it is in Bogotá, a city I love dearly and where I been living intermittently for over 12 years. Instagram: @mariaisaturtle

Being new in a city can be quite lonely and boring, especially if you don’t know what to do or if you don’t have many friends around you. Thankfully if you are new in Bogotá, there is Houspoon.com, a platform that will allow you to meet new people while enjoying a meal or learning a new cooking skill.

Forget about Tinder, Grindr, and all those platforms that add pressure onto meeting people and very often just leave you with a bad hangover. If you want to get to know new people the old fashioned way while practicing some Spanish, then Houspoon.com is the right place for you! So, let’s get your apron on and see what it is about.

What is it?

Houspoon is a digital platform that allows you to meet new people and new flavors by offering unique experiences that you can select and book online. Every experience is different, from enjoying a taster menu in a speakeasy restaurant or being part of a cooking class where you can eat amazing food and learn some recipes to dazzle all your friends and family. This platform is the best way to meet great people or do some networking while eating great food.

How does it work?

The platform is very straightforward. First you need to sign up and right after that, you will get a confirmation email that will take you to a form where you need to fill in some basic information about yourself, like birthday, gender, Instagram account (if you have one), some of your interests, and something fun about you. The whole process doesn’t take more than 10 minutes and it helps to build a sense of community while connecting you with people that share some of your same interests.

Right after you sign up, you can explore some of the available events where you can see the dates, how many people are attending, check their Instagram accounts, some of their personal information and interests, just so you know the kind of people you will meet. Once you select an event you like, you can select the number of people that will attend, you can go alone, bring a plus one, or invite all your buddies! You select the number, click on “pay,” and pay with your credit card; it’s as simple as that!

You will receive a confirmation email with all the information you need to arrive if there are any additional suggestions or information you need to keep in mind and that’s it! Prepare to have a great time getting to meet new and cool people!

How much does it cost?

Each event’s price in Houspoon Bogotá can vary depending on the complexity of it, the host, and many other factors. You can find networking events that range from $6 USD/$20,000 COP to cooking classes or wine tastings that can go up to $45 USD/$150,000 COP.

Overall, Houspoon is a great tool to get to do something different in a nice and easy-going environment. If you are uncertain about which event to sign up for, I advise you to try the event at Casa de Extranos (House of Strangers), which is a 5-course taster menu that will allow you to explore some of the amazing ingredients of 5 regions in Colombia. The dinner starts at 8 pm and it only hosts 12 people. In this case, you are allowed to bring a plus one because the idea is that the people don’t know each other (hence the name). But Carlos, the host, will make sure you have a great time. Check their Instagram account here and our article specifically about it here.

I think it’s safe to say that there is no other platform that allows you to choose where and what you want to be doing when you meet new people and that’s why it is so great. I think that people in Bogotá are really nice and enjoy welcoming new people into their group. Especially if you are foreigners, everyone would love to ask you about your country, so I can guarantee that no matter what you choose to do, you will rest assured that you will have a great time and make some friends with Houspoon Bogotá!
