Bogotá: a Christmas lights show that you have to experience

Christmas lights show

Valeria Garbin

Bogotá has a special brightness in December with the decorations and Christmas lights that make this capital a spectacle that you must see!

Christmas makes the Colombian capital shine! Bogotá is decorated with love and dedication for the holiday season. Almost every mall, park, and main avenue is filled with lights and ornaments that is sure to put you in the Christmas spirit!

In Bogotá, it is common for families and friends to make plans to go see the Christmas lights. It is an opportunity to tour the city, spend time with loved ones, and also do a little Christmas shopping.

Where to go

Across the city, there are a lot of Christmas lights spots you can visit, from the north to the city center you will find great places to have a good time while enjoying the Christmas decorations. For example, the center of the city and its main square, Plaza Bolívar, is a must-see on your visit to Bogotá During the year, when it doesn’t have lights, it’s still impressive, but imagine visiting it at night with all the Christmas decorations. It’s an unforgettable experience!

If you want to go out for a drink and visit some good bars and restaurants, you can go to the Usaquen park and see its iconic decorations, including the Santa Barbara Shopping Center, one of the most traditional shopping centers in the city that they literally line with lights inside and out. Usaquen is my personal favorite area, but you can find similar things in 93 Park, Andino Shopping Center, and Zona rosa.  If you want a more natural scene, you can go and tour Simón Bolívar park, a big metropolitan park with several big decoration displays and very nice Christmas lights.

All of these cool places to see Christmas decorations are mapped out on a route called Ruta de la Navidad (Christmas route) and if you want to see all the places you can go, visit this page https://www.rutadelanavidad.com/ or check out our article Ruta Navideña, and see the map with all the points of interest.

It is not only about the lights

It’s true that Bogotá looks amazing at night in December and I know that touring the city to see the Christmas decorations sounds pretty good already, but the city offers more than just pretty lights. During the last month of the year, in collaboration with different public entities of the city, events are organized in Bogotá around the Christmas route: plays, concerts, exhibitions, and nocturnal bike tours are scheduled from December 1st to December 31.

On the  Christmas route web page where you can see the map, you can also check the agenda of events week by week, and where to go to enjoy all of them.

Bogotá = Christmas spirit

Here in Bogotá, we really love Christmas, and if you have the chance to come this time of the year, you will experience it with a little bit more magic. Each corner of this city will remind you that we are in the most beautiful time of the year and your visit will be illuminated in an unexpected way, so don’t wait and come enjoy Christmas Bogotá style. As if that weren’t enough, this Christmas show is found in the cities around Bogotá, so if you see all the spots in the capital and want to continue exploring, you may be interested in this article: Christmas lights in Bogotá and its surroundings: Visit Boyacá

Now, just a few last tips for this Christmas lights tour: try to go with warm clothing, Bogotá at night can be very cold, especially in December. These places are usually quite crowded, so be careful with your personal items, try to carry closed bags, and always keep them close to you. Finally, both for safety and to enjoy this experience to the fullest,  use the buddy system, so you can share the journey with someone and feel more secure.
